New Event - "Lost Villages" with
Mary Robinson Sive
"Lost Villages" is the title of
a talk by local author and long-time Empire State Railway Museum
member Mary Robinson Sive, scheduled for August 16th at 1 PM at
the Phoenicia railroad station. Ms. Sive will have copies of her
book by the same title, recently back in print, on hand for signing
from 11 AM to 3 PM.
The book, published by the Delaware County
Historical Association, honors the many Delaware County communities
lost to reservoirs and others lost to a changing economy. In many
cases, cemeteries are the only remaining evidence of these former
settlements. The driving tours outlined in the book are complete
with maps, directions, and illustrations and also tell where to
look for former railroad beds, bridges, school houses, tannery chimneys,
or mill dams. The talk will touch on both the industrial history
of the area and its prominence in dairy production.
Ms. Sive's talk complements the summer exhibit
at the Empire State Railway Museum which features photographs and
maps of the villages that were lost or moved when the Ashokan Reservoir
was built. Titled, "Before the Water Rose: the fate of the
Ashokan Valley Villages, 1906-1916," this exhibit gives a glimpse
into the hamlets of Ashton, Brodhead, Brown Station, Olive Branch
and Olive City which disappeared forever, as well as the predecessors
of the villages that were relocated - West Hurley, Glenford, Olive,
West Shokan, Shokan, Olivebridge and Boiceville.
Ms. Sive, a resident of Margaretville, served
on the committee of the Catskill Watershed Corporation that achieved
installation of commemorative exhibits at each reservoir and spoke
at the dedication of the Pepacton reservoir exhibit.
